FASTRO Award

Dr. Carl. R. Bogardus, Jr. received his Fellow of ASTRO designation on November 5 at a special ceremony during the Society’s 48th Annual Meeting held November 5-9 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

During their 2006 Annual Meeting, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, 75 members were recognized as significant contributors to the field of radiation oncology. The prestigious cancer organization has more than 8,500 members who specialize in treating patient with radiation therapy.

“We created the ASTRO Fellows program to honor and recognize individuals like Dr. Bogardus who have given so much to the specialty of radiation oncology, the Society and the patients we all work together to cure,” said Prabhakar Tripuraneni, M.D., Chair of the ASTRO Board of Directors and a radiation oncologist at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, Calif.

Members of ASTRO are eligible to become a Fellow if they have been a member of the Society for at least 20 years, served in a leadership role for the organization and have made a significant contribution to the field of radiation oncology. The primary pathways to becoming a Fellow are research, patient care, education and leadership/service. The Society values contributions to all four areas, however, each nominee needed to have a truly outstanding contribution to at least one of the pathways to be named a Fellow.

The nominations were reviewed by a nine member Fellows Selection Committee who made recommendations to the ASTRO Board of Directors to make a final decision.
