Dr. Bogardus spent his academic medical career as Professor and Director of Radiation Oncology at the University of Oklahoma, retiring as Professor-Emeritus on April 1, 1995. He had a very active private practice of radiation oncology at the Cancer Treatment Centers of Oklahoma. In September, 2004 Dr. Bogardus was asked to return to the University of Oklahoma to open a new radiation treatment facility. He is now Professor, Clinical Director and Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology.
He has a long career in business and consulting as the founder and president of Cancer Care Network, Inc., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Dr. Bogardus is currently the featured speaker at BMSi Seminars (formerly known as CCN Seminars) which provide attendees with vital information related to radiation therapy billing and coding. With the current stress on documentation of procedures and Medicare compliance issues, he has become very involved in site visit audits of radiation oncology departments nationwide.
Dr. Bogardus’ primary interest over the past few years has been the development of the Radiation Oncology Coding and Nomenclature System resulting in numerous publications and presentations relative to the socioeconomic aspects of radiation oncology. Dr. Bogardus sits on various Medicare Advisory Panels and has conducted numerous audits for the Medicare Program. He has held numerous other offices in local, state and national radiology organizations.
In 1985, Dr. Bogardus, recognizing the significant need for software to assist the relatively new field of Radiation Oncology, spearheaded an effort to take a commercial software product and modify it to meet the needs of Radiation Oncology. Such an effort required a complete examination of the management and billing procedures required for Radiation Oncology. Most radiation oncology billing done today follows the guidelines laid out in his “User's Guide for Radiation Oncology Management and Billing Procedures”, the acknowledged “bible” in radiation oncology billing. As a result of his efforts, the first commercially available Radiation Oncology charge entry software was developed as “Medic for Radiation Oncology”. As CEO of Bogardus Medical Systems, Inc, he has written “Principles of Billing, Coding and Compliance In Radiation Oncology”, the successor reference work to his original “User’s Guide….”.
Designed by Dr. Bogardus, ONCOCHART is specifically designed to fill a gaping hole in the arena of Radiation Oncology practice management. ONCOCHART was developed to meet the compelling need to ensure that federally mandated policies and procedures are followed completely, that erroneous billings submitted to and rejected by Medicare and independent insurers is significantly reduced, and the productivity and profitability of Radiation Oncologists is enhanced. ONCOCHART was “designed by a physician for physicians”. It is unique in handling Radiation Oncology, in that it is truly User Friendly, is completely “Rules Driven,” and utilizes Graphic User Interface technology.
